A subsidiary of major insurance company Anthem, Inc., UniCare offers health insurance plans in multiple states, mainly Medicare and other supplemental insurance. They partner with other companies to provide services and promise affordable health care.
What is UniCare?
With its headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, UniCare is a specialty health insurer that is owned by Anthem, Inc., a large insurer associated with Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. Read our Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance review for more information on the company.
There is very little information offered on the history of the company, and the website is difficult to navigate and likely to confuse visitors. Links to separate websites are offered for some of UniCare’s various plans, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and state indemnity plans. This adds to the confusion, as the actual product listing on the main website shows only dental, vision, and life insurance and disability plans. UniCare is committed to supporting you in providing quality care and services to our members.

What products are offered?
UniCare offers dental, vision, life and disability, the best overall Medicare company health plans, and state indemnity plans depending on where you live. Many are employer-sponsored plans.
Dental
The website does not offer specific descriptions of the available plans but lists general coverage information. This includes 100% coverage for preventative treatment.
The site indicates that there are a variety of plan levels with flexible coverage options available. Find out whether Medicare Advantage covers dental implants if this is something you need before signing up for coverage.
UniView Vision
UniCare offers individual and employer-sponsored plans for vision care. These plans offer regular eye exams as well as allowances for eyeglasses and contacts. Again, limited information on plan details is available.
Coverage is offered at a range of large optical chains including Pearle Vision and Lenscrafters.
Life and Disability
UniCare’s life and disability plans are offered as group plans through employers. These can be employer-paid or voluntary benefits employees can select.
Like other health care products, there is little in the way of plan information. Term life insurance, short and long-term disability, and accidental death and dismemberment plans are all available either alone or as part of a package. Vision and dental can also be bundled into these employer-sponsored packages.
Medicare
The company’s Medicare website states that they no longer offer Medicare Part D coverage, although they do appear to still write Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans in some areas. We tried several zip codes in a variety of states, including zip codes where the company has offices, but were unable to return any results for Medicare plan information and details.
State Indemnity
UniCare writes state indemnity coverage for members in the state of Massachusetts. This coverage requires that the member qualify for the state’s Group Insurance Commission (GIC) and be insured through that plan. Find the best Massachusetts Medicare Advantage companies by researching online for more information.
There are four indemnity plans offered with different levels of coverage. These plans allow members to access a wider network of care, with PPO options available. One of the plans is a Medicare Extension, while the rest are non-Medicare.
Are the company’s rates competitive?
We were unable to find rates for any of the UniCare plans. In spite of the Medicare site offering online quotes, we did not find a zip code that would return us any rates, including the zip code where we run our usual comparisons.

Are the company’s ratings and consumer reviews positive?
UniCare has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there have been only three complaints on file in the past three years. It is difficult to say how accurate the rating and complaint volume is, however, given the fact that the company has offices in so many locations and splits its various products into separate websites and names.
Outside the BBB, we found little in the way of information on this company. This may be due to the different names, the ownership by Anthem, or the fact that they serve a specialty market and write a lot of group versus individual policies.
What’s the bottom line?
There is not enough information available on UniCare or its products to form a clear opinion on this company. It appears to be an insurer most people come into contact with either through a broker or as employer-sponsored benefits and is unlikely to make the list for the average individual insurance shopper.
Beacon has entered into an agreement with the UniCare State Indemnity Plan (UniCare) to manage behavioral health and substance use benefits for UniCare members..
