About Combined Insurance

Combined was founded in 1922 as Combined Registry Company, and they started out with an initial loan of only $100. The acquisition of American Casualty Company Post-Depression resulted in the creation of Combined Mutual Casualty Company, which was eventually changed again to Combined Insurance Company of America in 1947.

Combined spent the following decades in global expansion, taking their operation into Canada, England, and Australia. Combined went public after the creation of a holding company in 1980. Today the company has more than 5 million policies in force and is a Chubb company, making them a part of one of the biggest companies in the insurance industry worldwide.

Combined focuses solely on supplemental health insurance plans, writing them for both individuals and for employers as employee benefits. Their policies include accident and critical illness insurance as well as income protection coverage. The main Combined site makes no mention of Medicare Supplement insurance, although a search finds it listed on a separate extension of the site. We found it odd that this section of the site appears to have no link from the main site and can be found only through a specific search.

While we did find the page that mentions Medicare Supplement insurance, it is not particularly informative.

A list of which policies are available is not offered, the site simply directs visitors to contact an agent for more information. There is a form that can be filled out to request more information.

The site says that plan options vary by state and that coverage is not offered in all states. Beyond some general information on what Medicare Supplement is, there is not really much else to be learned from the website.

Since all Medicare Supplement companies are required to carry Plan A, the base plan, in states where the letter-coded system is in use, we can assume Combined does offer this option. They are also required to offer either Plan C or F, so there may be a Combined Insurance Medicare supplement Plan F, but we are unable to guess which of these they have available.

We found 295 reviews of this company on Pissed Consumer. That number is up since the last time we reviewed this company, and their overall star rating has gone down from 1.8 to 1.4. Most of the complaints surround refusal to pay out on claims. That is fairly common to most insurance companies. The overall number of complaints having increased is not surprising given the fact that they do not fall off on Pissed Consumer after any set number of years as they do with other rating sites.

Combined is a pretty big company, so overall the complaint ratio is not of much concern.
